This week we talk to Marie – Louise from Lovely Designs. Lovely designs launched in 2008 and produces quality, original stationary designs that are perfect for weddings and occasions. Marie-Louise talks to us about the business and what inspires her.
How did you start your business?
I got married to Matthew in October 2008. Having planned my own big day, designing the invites and all my stationery, I got a bit addicted to looking at and making pretty things.
To feed my wedding habit, I set up Lovely Designs with my best pal, Philippa, from Uni. Since then have designed wedding items for some lovely friends and family, including the simply stunning Confetti range for Philippa’s wedding to James in 2010. I have also been a bridesmaid three times so it’s now well and truly in my system now!
What inspires you?
I am a huge fan of Pinterest and may be slightly addicted to it! I find it a great way to store and share inspirational images and articles for future reference. I read the free Stylist magazine which is so well designed and written. It doesn’t always directly inspire me, but you never know what may spark an idea and it’s a great way to keep up to date with trends. If all else fails walking about, travelling and taking a break helps to reset the brain cells…
Lovely Designs is a real passion of mine and love working with our clients to create gorgeous bespoke invitations and stationery that’s personal to them. You never know what someone is going to ask for and that’s part of the fun of collaborating with them.
What are your favourite eras and why?
I think the Art Deco period is so glamorous and timeless, especially the architecture and jewellery. I also love the organic floral elements of the Art Nouveau movement, in particular, Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s designs.
What is your key piece from your collection?
My favourite Lovely Designs product has to be the Rose Heart design for Becci and Jon. They were so pleased with the outcome and I still feel proud when I look at their invitation.
Describe your individual style?
I think I have fairly varied tastes and like to mix things up. I love wearing and using colour in my designs. I am drawn to patterns and illustrations but also like clean lines and clear space. I also love things that have an unexpected twist or sprinkling of fun.
